Free AI visibility checker tools, and what they missWhat a quick free check shows, and what it can’t

A free checker can tell you if ChatGPT named you once. It can’t tell you if it still will next week, or why a competitor keeps winning instead.

A free AI visibility checker is a tool you point at your domain or brand name, and it hands back a score or a short report at no cost, usually with no signup. Ahrefs and Honeyb will tell you whether ChatGPT or Gemini named you. The catch is what that score is: a few answers, from one run, on one day.

An AI visibility platform asks that same question many times on a schedule and reports the share of answers that named you. A free checker gives you a single draw from that number. A bad result on even one run is worth knowing, but two people can run the same free checker on the same brand an hour apart and get different answers, and neither answer tells them if they’re ahead of a competitor or just had a lucky pass.

What an AI visibility checker shows you

AI visibility is your share of voice: the share of answers that name your brand, across the buyer questions you track, each asked many times on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, over a window (30 days is the usual default). Every brand gets its own share on the same denominator, so the numbers don’t have to add up to 100%, because one answer can name more than one brand.

A free checker doesn’t measure that rate. It runs your brand through one prompt, or a small fixed set of them, once, against one or a few assistants, and reports whatever came back: a score, a yes or no mention, or a short writeup.

That’s a single data point, and one probe is basically a coin flip. Ask again tomorrow and the answer can change, and a free checker can’t tell you whether it just did.

The three kinds of AI visibility checker, and which answers your question

These tools split into three groups, and they answer different questions.

Mention checkers (Ahrefs, Birdeye, Honeyb.ai) report whether, and how, you showed up in an assistant’s answers. This is the group that answers “did ChatGPT say my name.”

Estimators (SEOcrawl) read your homepage to work out your category, then have an AI model estimate your visibility. SEOcrawl says so itself: an estimate, not a live measurement.

Readiness checkers (Arobis) don’t ask an assistant anything about you. They test whether ChatGPT’s, Claude’s, Perplexity’s and Gemini’s crawlers can reach and read your site: crawler access, structured data, whether you have an llms.txt file. That’s a prerequisite for showing up at all.

A high readiness score doesn’t mean an assistant is naming you, and a mention checker can’t tell you why a page never gets read in the first place. Know which question you’re asking before you pick a tool.

AI visibility checkers worth trying

Omnipresence is the paid option on this list, and the other five are free.

1. Omnipresence - Best for teams that want the check to lead somewhere, not dead-end in a PDF

Omnipresence tracks whether ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity recommend you or a competitor, with each question run many times on a schedule instead of once. It isn’t a free checker: plans start at $19 a month on Starter, billed annually, with your model costs paid directly to your provider. You can try Pro for seven days with no card.

Pros

  • Tracks four assistants on a repeating schedule, not a single run
  • Shows the searches each assistant ran and the pages that beat you

Cons

  • Built for teams that want to work the gap the check finds, not stop at a number
  • Built for ongoing tracking, not a one-off free look

2. Ahrefs AI Visibility Checker - Best for a known name and a six-platform first look

Ahrefs AI Visibility Checker needs no signup and checks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, AI Overviews and AI Mode in one run.

Pros

  • No signup for the free check
  • Covers six platforms in a single run

Cons

  • The free report is a limited preview, capped at the top 5 results per section
  • Ongoing tracking needs Brand Radar, with custom prompts from $50 a month

3. Honeyb.ai - Best for a quick gut check with zero signup

Honeyb.ai runs five buyer questions through Gemini with Google Search for free, no account needed.

Pros

  • No account, and the first answer arrives in about 10 seconds
  • Simple enough to run on a competitor’s name just as fast

Cons

  • The free version checks one engine only
  • The full 8-engine report, covering ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Grok, DeepSeek, AI Mode and AI Overviews, needs a paid plan, which starts with a 3-day free trial

4. Birdeye - Best for local and multi-location businesses already using reputation software

Birdeye gives a free report covering one location on ChatGPT, plus a sentiment read and a benchmark against local competitors.

Pros

  • Sentiment read included, on how AI answers portray your brand
  • Competitor benchmark included in the free report

Cons

  • Requires signup with your business name, website and location
  • Gemini, Perplexity and multi-location reporting need the full Search AI product

5. SEOcrawl - Best for a no-signup estimate across all four assistants

SEOcrawl needs no signup and covers ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity in one domain report, up to 3 reports a day.

Pros

  • No signup, and all four major assistants in one report
  • Up to 3 free reports a day, so you can check a few competitors the same day

Cons

  • The free report estimates from your homepage content, not a live multi-prompt measurement
  • Weekly tracking needs the paid Prompt Tracking plan

6. Arobis - Best for checking whether your site is even crawlable, before you worry about mentions

Arobis is free with no signup for the score, and tests crawler access, structured data, semantic structure and an llms.txt file against ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity.

Pros

  • Free, no signup for the baseline score
  • Checks the technical side a mention checker skips entirely

Cons

  • It’s a readiness check, so it never asks an assistant whether it would name you
  • It crawls your homepage only, and the detailed fix plan sits behind a contact form

What a single check can’t tell you

Sample size is the limit: one run on one day tells you almost nothing about whether an assistant will still name you next week.

Our Credibility Layer study shows how much sits behind a single answer. Across 200 reasoning sessions, we logged 5,933 searches and 1,982 citations, and a real recommendation came from about 30 web searches across a three-tier credibility stack, two-thirds of them hidden verification that never shows up as a visible citation. A free checker’s one run isn’t close to that.

There’s a second gap underneath the first. Most free checkers report a mention, not a verdict on whether the assistant put you forward as a pick versus naming you in passing. Being recommended is worth more than being merely named, and a single mention count can’t tell the two apart.

A bad score on even one run is still worth knowing, and it’s a faster first look than building your own. A rate is what tells you whether you’re ahead or behind.

How to check your AI visibility without fooling yourself

Here’s how to check your AI visibility for free without walking away with a false sense of where you stand.

1. Pick the checker that answers your real question

A mention checker if you want to know whether you’re named, a readiness checker if you suspect you’re not even getting read, and an estimator if a rough first read is enough.

2. Write your own buyer question, not the tool’s demo prompt

Where the tool takes a custom prompt, use the question a buyer would ask, in the words a buyer would use.

3. Run it more than once, on more than one day

One answer is a small sample. Run the same prompt three or four times across a few days before you trust the result.

4. Check the same prompt against your two or three real competitors

A score only means something next to someone else’s. On its own, it’s just a number.

5. Decide whether you need a rate

If step 3 gave you three different answers, you have a sampling problem. Omnipresence runs each tracked question many times across all four assistants on a schedule and reports the share that recommended you, with a few questions held back as controls so you can tell a real move from noise.

Frequently Asked Questions about AI Visibility Checkers

Does a free AI visibility checker test the same thing as a Google ranking checker?

No: a ranking checker reads Google’s index. An AI visibility checker looks at what an assistant answers, and the two barely correlate: our 10x AI Visibility Refresh study measured a Spearman rho of 0.017 between Google position and ChatGPT citations.

Does a free checker show which sources an assistant used?

Some do, within limits. Ahrefs’ free preview lists the top 5 cited domains and top 5 cited pages. It won’t show you the searches the assistant ran to get there.

How often should I re-check my AI visibility with a free tool?

Once a quarter, and again after you ship a page you expect to change the answer. Assistants’ answers drift as models update and competitors publish new pages.

Is there a free way to track AI visibility on an ongoing basis, not just once?

No. Every free tool here is a one-time snapshot, and scheduled tracking across all four assistants is a paid category.
