Topics and tags
Group prompts into topics for per-topic visibility reporting, and use tags for the cuts that do not belong in the topic structure.
Updated October 20, 2026
A prompt set grows past the point where a flat list is readable at around thirty prompts. Topics and tags are the two ways of cutting it, and they do different jobs.
Topics
A topic is the cluster a prompt belongs to, and the product reports visibility per topic. That is the difference from a tag: topics appear in the charts.
Pick topics that map to how your market splits, not to how your site is organised. If buyers divide the world into "for agencies" and "for in-house teams", those are the topics, even if your site has eleven product pages.
Per-topic reporting, on the Visibility by topic screen, is what turns a flat number into a usable one. An overall Visibility Score of 20 percent made of 45 percent in one topic and 3 percent in another is two findings pretending to be one.
Tags
Tags are free-form and can overlap. Use them for everything that is not the topic structure: the client's funnel stage, a campaign, a quarter, the person who owns the work, the prompts you want to revisit.
Set them as you go
Both are easier to set when you add a prompt than to retro-fit across eighty. Assign a topic to every prompt at creation and treat an untopiced prompt as unfinished.
One topic, one answer
A topic that contains the whole prompt list tells you nothing beyond the overall number. If every prompt is in one topic, you have not segmented yet; three to six topics is where the reporting starts earning the setup.
